Parental rights in education

Parents play a foundational role in the education and safety of their children. While schools provide structured learning environments, the primary responsibility for a child’s overall health, development, and success begins at home. From teaching respect and discipline to encouraging curiosity and adventure, parents directly influence and shape the character of their children long before they enter a classroom.

Education is most effective when parents take an active role in the learning process. Parents have the right and responsibility to ensure that academic environments reflect the needs, values, and well-being of their children. By engaging in their children’s education, parents help build stronger families and stronger communities.

Parental rights in education are not only about having a voice in school-related decisions, but also recognizing the duty parents have to teach, guide, and prepare their children for life.

Public schools present day

An overwhelming majority — approximately 50 million — children attend U.S. public schools. In light of this, our nation has a steady decline in basic subjects. National polls show nearly 9 in 10 parents believe their child is at or above grade level in reading (88%) and math (89%). However, data indicates only 30% of 8th graders are proficient in reading and math (source: Leaning Heroes).

Heavy emphasis on standardized testing, an infiltration of political ideologies, and streamlined focus on “social emotional” methods have replaced academics. Loudoun County Public Schools is the quintessential picture of parents battling to regain influence and control of the learning environment. Parents must take a more proactive approach to guiding and protecting their children on school grounds.

H.R.5 - 118th Congress (2023-2024)

This bill establishes various rights of parents and guardians regarding the public elementary or secondary school education (including secondary career and technical education) of their children. Local educational agencies (LEAs) and schools must comply with the requirements of the bill in order to receive federal education funds. Specifically, the bill requires schools to notify parents and guardians of their rights regarding the education of their children.
