Texas student dies by suicide after shooting teacher

A 15-year-old student turned the gun on themself after shooting a teacher at Hill County College Preparatory High School in Texas. The school is located in the jurisdiction of Comal Independent School District (Comal ISD).

On April 2, 2026, KSAT News reported that the shooter, whose identity has not been made public, brought his grandfather’s gun to school undetected. The student was pronounced dead on the scene while the teacher—whose identity is also concealed—was taken to a San Antonio hospital and is expected to survive.

Reports say, no other students or staff members were hurt during the incident. After the campus lockdown lifted, students were bussed to a nearby middle school to be reunited with family members. The deceased student’s parents were questioned after police located them waiting in the reunification line.

Although the shooter was reportedly failing some classes and experiencing other academic-related issues, police investigators have not released a statement confirming what may have motivated the incident.

This story is still developing.

Comal ISD’s school board policies reflect the district’s efforts to regulate student mental health and safety on school grounds.

According to Policy FFAE–Wellness and Health Services: School-Based Health Centers, a student’s parent or legal guardian can give consent for the student to “receive ongoing services or may limit consent to one or more services provided on a single occasion.”

Policy FFEA–Counseling and Mental Health: Counseling requires parental consent for treatment and parental approval before students receive mental health instruction. However, the policy states:

“A child may consent to counseling for:

  1. Suicide prevention,

  2. Chemical addiction or dependency; or

  3. Sexual, physical, or emotional abuse.”

Another district mental health policy says the Texas Education Association—which is affiliated with the National Education Association, an organization that focuses on “racial justice” and LGBTQ+ issues—provides Comal ISD an annually updated “list of recommended best practice-based programs and research-based practices” in various subject areas. Subject areas include, “Early mental health prevention and intervention,” “Suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention,” “Positive behavior interventions and supports,” and “Safe, supportive, and positive school climate.”

Traditionally, K-12 schools have referred students to off-campus mental health services and providers. However, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, federally-funded, on-site mental health clinics are still being implemented to supposedly combat increased cases of student anxiety and depression.

As of publication, no media sources have determined if the shooter in the opening story was referred to any on-site mental health services. Despite adopting a campus weapons policy, Comal ISD does not use metal detectors as a method its student safety and prevention practices.
